Reposted from @saveourbluworld (@get_regrann) - Summary

Europe's July heat wave caused Greenland's ice to melt at a rate that scientists didn't expect to see for another 50 years.

Greenland's ice sheet lost 55 billion tons of water over five days in July and August — enough to cover the state of Florida in almost 5 inches of water.

Ice melt due to climate change contributes to sea-level rise, which leads to flooding in coastal areas.

This summer, unprecedented wildfires also burned in Greenland, Alaska, and Siberia, contributing to ice melt as their soot and smoke traveled across the Arctic.

MY TAKE —
Greenland’s aggressive melting is consistent with what scientists have been seeing in other parts of the Arctic.

Seriously folks, today, right now, we already have the technology
to remove surplus CO2 from the atmosphere
and
to convert the world’s energy systems to clean-energy.
We already have regenerative farming practices.
Let’s bite the bullet and go green in all ways as soon as possible before global warming and climate change bite in a really big way.

“SIGNIFICANT CONSEQUENCES,” says the author of the study.

Furthermore, "decreased rates of vegetation growth will reduce vegetation biomass inland—including crop yields, herbage yields, forest biomass stock, etc.—which will reduce the supply to human society."

My Summary Of The Article —
Warmer air is sucking water from soils and plants and reducing photosynthesis,
carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration,
plant growth
and, of course,
oxygen generation.

... “Declines in the productivity and growth of land vegetation around the world since the late 1990s are the result of changes in the water content of the atmosphere, according to research which casts new light on the functioning of Earth's ecosystems in the face of climate change.

A team of researchers—led by Wenping Yuan from Peking University—analyzed four global climate datasets which included satellite imagery, revealing that vegetation growth had stalled or reversed over the last two decades or so, according to a study published in the journal Science Advances.”

Now, More Than Ever, ...

Now, More Than Ever,
We Must Take Care Of Our World And Everything In It
Because We Are Nearly
8 BILLION STRONG.

Eight billion people, for example,
can make our oceans unlivable by littering beaches, and
drive sharks and dolphins to extinction by simply eating shark fin soup.

Everything we do today is multiplied by 8 billion people. Eight billion flipping the light switch, racing the car engine, jacking up the heater or air conditioner.

We are 8 billion people crowded on the railing of a huge ship, Mother Earth, and the ship is tipping over, threatening to spill us all.

The only way the world and everything we love can survive 8 billion people is for all us to step back from the edge and live a life of balance and respect with nature.

After all, we all live “in” the environment,
NOT apart from it,
despite how much we try to isolate and separate ourselves from the elements... SAVING NATURE SAVES US.

That’s a big mindset change, I know, but only “human change” can preserve the world as we know it today. We must find a way to thrive as a species and coexist with healthy populations of plants and wildlife all over the world. After all, we live “in” the environment, not apart from it..SAVING NATURE SAVES US.

Certainly, some shred of humanity will survive no matter how bad things become, but I think the world will be a far sorrier place without bees, butterflies, birds, elephants, whales and so on.

Just about everything we love today will pass before our eyes if we don’t change as soon as possible how we live in this world.

LAKE HOPATCONG, N.J. — ...

LAKE HOPATCONG, N.J. —
New Jersey's average temperatures have risen nearly 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit since 1895 — double the average for the Lower 48 states.

In 1926, THE WINTER ICE WAS 2-FEET THICK, and the lake hosted boisterous wintertime carnivals. As many as 15,000 skaters took part, and automobile owners would drive onto the thick ice. Thousands watched as local hockey clubs battled one another and the Skate Sailing Association of America held competitions, including one in 1926 that featured 21 iceboats on blades that sailed over a three-mile course.

MY TAKE —
So, yes, America and the world just didn’t notice that our winters were becoming less extreme until the last two decades. Unfortunately, many people still haven’t noticed, or simply don’t care unless they have been personally affected by climate change.

The world can’t wait for all climate deniers to be personally affected by climate change to take global warming seriously. Those of us who accept the science of global warming and climate change must act now to accelerate climate change mitigation and environmental protection.

Sailing across the Atlantic will be a huge challenge. It would be so easy to just get on a plane and justify it as a chance to spread the message about the climate crisis. I admire @gretathunberg‘s commitment.

I’ve seen some posts recently damming the #FridaysforFuture movement. Saying that the kids are hypocritical - striking while simultaneously being consumers of fast food, disposables and power-hungry tech. But who taught them to live like this? Who has failed to act before now? The effects of carbon emissions on our planet isn’t new, but it’s now urgent. It asks big changes of us all, but I don’t think there will be many willing to sail across the Atlantic for it.

Wishing Greta a safe journey ⛵️ #plasticnews #climatebreakdown #climatecrisis #dowhatyoucan #sailing #spreadingthemessage #actnow #reducecarbonfootprint

For America’s Midwest, Flooding Is Becoming Worse Because As The Atmosphere Becomes Warmer It Holds More Water, kinda like forested land that absorbs water and holds back flooding.

Since the late 1950’s, on the average, rainfall has increased and spring weather has become wetter.
This trend is not only expected to continue, but to become
FAR WORSE,
unpredictable, widespread and extreme as the global average temperature continues to increase over the next 20-years and beyond, with largely unabated climate change.

The thing is, we have the knowledge, resources and technology to not only
STOP THIS TREND, BUT EVEN REVERSE IT: .

1) Convert the world to a clean-energy economy in the next 20-years and cut fossil-fuel-derived CO2 to net-zero.

2) Restore forests by planting up to 500 billion to one trillion trees native to regions around the world.

3) Build and operate at least 20,000, if not a lot more, direct carbon capture machines around the world to remove surplus atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). .

Right now, with 500 billion tons of surplus CO2 in the atmosphere,
we need to remove up to 300 billion tons of surplus atmospheric CO2 to stop today’s climate change. Roughly 500 billion mature trees can remove a maximum of 100 billion tons of atmospheric CO2. However, planting billions of trees is easier said than done. In many ways, it’s easier to build thousands of direct air capture machines and get more precise and immediate results than with billions of new trees.

THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW....

THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW.
...
.... “One of the important findings of our work is that there are a lot of actions that we can take now. They’re available to us,” Pamela McElwee told The New York Times. “What some of these solutions do require is attention, financial support, enabling environments.

The global food supply is on the brink of disaster, according to a newly published report by the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

More than 100 experts contributed to the report, which concludes that climate change is already negatively impacting food production in real ways. And the problem is poised to get even worse if global temperatures continue to increase — though it’s not yet too late to avoid a total catastrophe.

According to the report’s authors, it’s getting harder to produce food in the face of more droughts, heat waves, wildfires, floods, and permafrost thaw.

Add to that the increasing amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which decrease the quality of the food that is produced, and it’s clear we’re headed toward a future in which there’s even less food to go around — meaning the food that is available will cost more.

🔊 Sound on. How I stopped the climate crisis. @realolifrost
It was a warm evening in July and I was tossing and turning in my sleep. Too stubborn to allow myself a fan I persevered with the heat. Things were bad, but they were about to get much worse.

When I opened my eye a fraction and looked towards the crack in my door, I saw it. A tiny ray of light spilling through from the hall. A light – left on.

I knew it wasn't going to be easy. Having lay there so long already, I would have to summon every last ounce of strength to make it out of bed. But heroically, I did it.

As soon as my feet hit the floor I was running. I ran all the way across the room and into the hall. And then, using my fingers, I turned off the light.

Turning off the light has been one of my most challenging pieces, both as an activist and as a filmmaker. I'm immensely proud of the end result and I hope you enjoy it as well.

I wish you all the best luck in fixing climate change yourselves.
